Opening Address for Spring Summer 2009

The Family Life Centre is managed on a day to day basis by Fr. Brian Conlon Director. He is assisted by the Core Group.

This Spring of 2009 will see many people respond to challenges that were unforeseen a year ago. Signs are already clear that a greater extent of suffering will be experienced as we come to grips with the message that as a Country we are living beyond our means.

Many of the volunteers and staff of this Centre experienced personal tough times and have paved new paths of life and hope out of desperate situations. Very often people who have come through this Centre say that it was at critical broken moments they first accessed here and the rest is history; time and time again they recovered themselves and moved on as new, empowered and energised people.

Reflecting on the lives of people, scholars have highlighted the pattern of growth that emerges from people who hit rock bottom. Many say no pain, no gain.

Garth Brooks sings that he would prefer not to miss the pain if it meant he were to miss the dance. Similarly, many here attest to the silver lining to the cloud bursts that wrecked such personal and communal havoc.

We are a resilient people

MISSION STATEMENT

Changing circumstances in today's world call for a new approach to the care of families. There is an increasing awareness of the crucial issues facing contemporary marriage and family life-the pressure of modern living, unemployment, increase in addictions, isolation within communities, changes in moral and spiritual values and marginalization.

We aim to support and enrich family life in its diverse forms today, to affirm the value and uniqueness of each human being irrespective of gender, marital status, family status, sexual orientation, religious belief, age, disability, race, membership of the travelling community.

We aim to provide an atmosphere of welcome and peace and enrichment for individuals, couples and families to explore important issues and find meaningful ways of living, through our comprehensive range of professional services, support groups and programmes. In this culture of the individual we aim to build on families strengths.

We aim to empower leaders to work with families by providing essential training and skills for growth and development.

We aim to develop a holistic approach linking Spirituality with human development.

We aim to network with other agencies in the statutory and voluntary sectors, which work for the well being of families.
